Abstract

Introduction: HOLISTÉA Collège Ostéopathique Européen (COE), an European college, is training osteopaths since 1987 in France and Germany. Considering that Osteopathic knowledge has to evolve along with medical, fundamental and human knowledge, in 1994 the COE initiated a research department and established scientific partnerships in order to assess and develop scientific data linked with osteopathy.

Methods: This study analysed a sample of patients having consulted the COE clinic between 2011 and 2013 and having be recorded in a clinical case report in order to increase the knowledge of these patients and to prepare a clinical study on the effectiveness of Osteopathic care. Data are keyed retrospectively and include, among others, sociodemographic data, inpatients medical status, history and chronic disease.

Results: Women represent 64 % of the 600 patients enrolled and the 40-49 years old patients represent 47 % of all the cases. 43 % of the sample are employees. Overall, 72 % of patients reported at least one chronic condition and 95 % reported at least one traumatic or surgical history. The the main reason for seeking osteopathic care is pain, presented by 94 % of patients.

Conclusion: This study shows the feasibility of a descriptive study of population consulting at the COE clinic and gives a first description of patients consulting an osteopathic clinic

Keywords: teaching, osteopathy, medical presentation, osteopathic care
